Sylvia And Peter’s Workshop – Spin Like Tasmanian Devil!

I’m quite sorry (not really) that I skipped couple days of blogging but I underwent some blog writing courses in my head that shall help me post better posts about the dancing. I was told that this blog lacked images and I could not take a picture of myself in the venue I danced that day. Why cat? Everybody loves cats, that’s why.

Anyway, we drove to south east London to get to the venue. It was not so bad, had a chance to drive around central London and stuff …

Met a few friends of mine since I dance everywhere … but you know it right? OK, the workshop started. We had this awesome routine which was awesome indeed. Don’t know if long but it was awesome, there it is: lindy circle from open, 6 beat tuck turn, 6 beat bypass, Texas Tommy, break, 6 beat bypass, sugar push, 6 beat lasso, 6 beat wheel, another 6 beat bypass …

Lindy circle and 6 beat tuck turn are pretty much self-explanatory. Just a regular circle and a tuck turn.

6 beat bypass with variation

Now that’s where awesomeness began. Followers had this first triple step variation and they switched triple step to a slide. Floor was good enough to slide without suede on the shoes! I tried sliding but it’s more for followers. For leaders, there was variation for the second triple step which helped with Texas Tommy variation. So men instead of triple stepping, they walked twice. It was not like regular step back, it was like crossed step.

Tasmanian Tommy

OK, this “Tommy” does not come from Texas … 😀 I am pretty sure that everybody remembers Looney Toons … and Tasmanian Devil who could spin like hell …

OK, about this Texas Tommy variation – since leader’s weight was on the left, we couldn’t do regular rock step so we did this sweep with the right leg and then straight into triple step. Then we had this TT variation where we turn much faster on beat 5 to create higher momentum and by the end of beat 6, leads had switched arms (left to right) already. We also stomped off on beat 6. It was great! Then we just shimmy or move hips for 6 beats and stomp off …

OK, the second part of the routine was similarly awesome. It started with a 6 beats bypass and we end up connected with both arms.

Sugar push

Not sure why it’s called sugar push … to me, it felt like furniture push lol. Instead of regular rock step, leads had to do two steps back and then on beat 3, tap with the left leg while stretching arms slightly out and on beat 4, leads had to step forward with the left leg while pushing followers backwards and then triple step on the spot.

Cowboy lasso

OK, just like sugar push, cowboy lasso was something new to me. Shall we call this move “Lasso tool used to catch Tasmanian Devil” lol … because momentum is quite fast as well. You are connected with both arms. Leads rock step to the right side and move arms to the left and then back to the right side and release their left arm while moving right hand around their heads and then quickly spinning around to face their followers. It’s all should be completed by beat 4 so we both can normally triple step to the right. I am pretty sure that this Cowboy lasso move is not clearly explained but then again, I heard people don’t read technicality sentences on my blog anyway lol.


Well, it’s self explanatory … leads are connected with their right arm “sideways” so leads rock step rotationally, triple step and lead followers to spin and then they connect (left 2 right).

Last tulip bypass

Yes, this was a variation for followers. On the last triple step, they blossom like tulips! They get their left leg in on beat 5, up and down on beat 2. As far as I understand, it starts on 5 (for 6 beat move) or 7 (for 8 beat move) and goes into rock step or something … I am not follower so I wouldn’t know but it looked nice!

What else did I learn that day? My own rock step variation where I pave follower’s way with my arm … 😀

Conclusion: it was bloody well worth going to this workshop and if you missed it, well, I am sorry (NOT) for you.
