The Last Chance Ragtime Band at Harlem Nights in Watford

Hello all! So last Saturday I went to Harlem Nights in Watford (finally, got a chance to dance in my local Hertfordshire). There was a band performing live. The band is called “The Last Chance Ragtime Band”.

I came quite early – quarter past eight. There were a few people in but no one was dancing. At around 8:30, we had a taster class. It was fun to watch, even though I did not take it. I prepared my coffee, sat on the chair and said hello to my friends from London or Cambridge. Yup, there were people from all over the place. I also had a third cup of coffee that day. I have dramatically reduced coffee intake – from four or five cups a day down to one or two. It helps with sleeping problem, etc …

Anyway, class took about 40-50 minutes and it was fun, as I mentioned earlier. As far as I remember, there was Charlston basic, funny inner foot shaky basic, “moving-round” basic (6 beat) and as I called it – mini chase.

Then I had a few more dances before the band came on. They were good. The band was really good acutally. I don’t know how often they play in London … they come from Cambridge and I might be seeing them at Cambridge Lindy Exchange in October (if I and they are coming 😀 ). Anyway, the band plays mostly medium/fast songs, a bit longer than normal not-live songs you hear but that was great, the vibe was really good to dance to. I believe I mentioned in some other post that there are songs and then there are songs with really great vibe so the band had the latter type of songs. I was really impressed but I did not take a photo with the band 🙁

Anyway, socials were great, we had all the main routines – shim sham, tranky doo and big apple. I did only shim sham. I know I have to learn tranky doo and big apple. I mean, I should remember rather than learn as I learned both routines long time ago … maybe twice or more already 😀 The floor of the venue is just lovely … the only problem was that it was too hot but have you seen a lindy hop event that was cold? I don’t think so. Another problem was that it was way too short. I didn’t have time to dance with all the followers. I think there was a really good turn out – around 40-50 people.

I can’t say much more really except that I had a really good time dancing with my local dancers. The band was amazing. I really enjoyed and I might be back in August but then I also got Standon Calling festival that weekend so I don’t know if I can make to Harlem Nights on 1st August. I know I will be coming to Breast Fest in October.

The next event I got planned is Swing Out at Sing Den where Down for the Count will play live! I would suggest to go there as it will be amazing! If you see me, come and say “hi” and let’s have a selfie and then a dance or two … or trillions … 😀

Oh, and always, selfie time 😀
