Scissors Big Apple

Hello,

Today I am going to merge two posts in one – SavoyHop and Club Savoy classes. Sorry but I am getting quite busy and all …

So on Monday, we added upon our Big Apple. We learned staggers, boogie backwards and apple jacks. This is what we have learned so far: Shafts (3 eights), break, stomp pushes, frog + fall off the log, rocks, staggers, boogie backwards, apple jacks (1 eight in place, another eight moving but it is required to turn around).

Ok, we had a break, chat, coffee, etc …

Then the intermediate class began. I must admit it, it was much more exciting than the Monday before where we did 3 wall Dean Colin’s swing outs … we did rotational swing outs. We learned how to lead difference between normal swing out and rotational. It is all about collapsing (almost) our followers by the end of beat 4. It’s like twisting shoulders. It was fun. Then we learned another move. THAT WAS AMAZING MOVE! I had never done this before and I enjoyed it very much so … even though it was quite easy and simple but amazing. Unfortunately, I don’t know the real name of this move so let’s call it “hack” or something. You start in open (double handed), then rock step and triple step towards your follower. At this point, both dancers’ arms must be stretched out to the sides. I remember I learned something similar when I was brand new and that move was used in 1920s Charleston. At the same time you are staggered. Then you move rotationally. As you step on 5 and 6, leads twist their body in clockwise direction and then back to “staggered” position on beat 6. Then leads disconnect left arm so they keep follower’s with their right arm. Then they do rotational rock step. Well, it’s more like rock step back. It allows followers turn in front of leads. Even leads are supposed to spin on beats 3 and 4 but since I am lazy, I didn’t 🙁 Then we connect in open on beats 5 and 6. It was awesome.

Then socials started. We did tranky doo and jitterbug strolls. No shim sham this time 🙁 but I danced until I dropped dead really … 🙂

OK, yesterday I went to Club Savoy. It was also great. In first class we did swing out variations. First variation we did was suited for followers. It was like twisting on one leg all the way through beats 7 and 2. That move required whip swing out (the one where followers are already on the other side by beat 5 I think). Then we learned variation for men. We did sweep on the right leg through beats 7 and 8 and then kick on left on1 (as in kick change or switch or something) and then another kick on the right (again, like switch or something). Then we had to do a triple step since we lost rock step. It was quite hard! Then, we learned …

…SCISSORS VARIATION!

Yes, scissors variation was amazing. I mean it! We learned how to lead it and all but it is difficult to execute it properly since lead on beat 1 requires arm movement rather than core movement … but yes, it was amazing …

Then we had a break and all … and beginner’s class started. We did a swing out variation that looks like outside turn variation but is quicker and requires leads to spin as well. I was told to spin … I didn’t spin in the beginning as I hate it and cannot do it 🙁 Well, after being told I tried to spin but had some problems and stuff … I always get off the way … anyway, after that we go straight into Frankie Manning fingers. I’ve done it in the past, it’s not that hard. Then we had 6 beats pass by where we did fingers after pass by as well. We also did this stomp off exercise where we had to stomp off on even beats but not odd and then we had to do a rock step right after. It was a good practice!

That’s all really, sorry I am getting busier now that my uni started. When I don’t blog, it’s not because I don’t get excited but I get too busy. My creativity is down as well, I guess I don’t get too much sleep …
